Socrates would likely see in the Prince a selfish ruler, while Machiavelli would see in Socrates a dangerous idealist whose ideas would lead to instability and the death of the state in which these ideas were implemented. He also argues that the Prince himself should have a healthy amount of fear, both of his subjects and external threats, and that this fear will allow the Prince to preserve himself and therefore the state which he presides over (p. 67). Socrates would disagree with this fundamentally, for him it is not true that â€Å"†¦where there is fear there is also reverence†¦Ã¢â‚¬ , he would argue that in fact fear and reverence stand in sharp contrast to one another (Plato, 1987, p. 35). Using fear as a tool would not enable one to reach the ideal that Socrates espouses. He also addresses fear as a condition of a ruler by saying that a man should not consider life and death when making decisions, but again should only look to whether his actions are good and just. For him â€Å"†¦to be afraid of death is only another form of thinking that one is wise when one is not†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (pp. 59-60). My Dog Cleopatra Essay Example For Students

My Dog Cleopatra Essay I’ll never forget the day my God daughter showed up on my door step holding a big black dirty gym bag across her shoulders saying, Hi, Auntie, I got a surprise for you! ; little did I know this day would soon become an event we’d each retell throughout the years. As I welcomed my niece inside, she quickly flopped this bag onto my kitchen table, carefully unzipping it to reveal its contents of what looked like a large fluffy balled up blanket (you know the ones that comes with the matching pillow built in and all rolled up into one) Well, as my son and I moved towards the kitchen table for a closer look, we noticed that this large fluffy black ball was not a blanket-pillow thingy at all, but a real live dog. Oh no! My heart immediately began to sink and the look on my sons face went from sheer excitement and enthusiasm and sudden sadness. You see, it was not too long ago that we lost our dearly loved Snow. Snow was our Maltese terrier. She was my eldest son’s first pet, which was also given to us as a gift. Until one day, incidentally, while out for a walk with my son, she was stolen. My son was only eight years old at the time; and for him, the loss of Snow was very traumatic and still very fresh in his mind, that the thought of replacing his Snow with another dog was unthinkable. While we all missed Snow very much, and missed having a pet in the house, the idea of getting another one never came up. Yet here we are today with this tiny, big brown- eyed, fluffy mound of cuteness sitting on our kitchen table. And from what my God daughter explains, is in need of a home. Ok, right now I’m thinking â€Å"I’m the adult here; and as you can imagine, this entire scene has caught me completely off guard. At this point, I’m feeling completely uncomfortable and annoyed towards my God daughter for putting me in such awkward position. And even though having another pet in the home would have filed the obvious void that Snows absence has left, I am honestly not ready to deal with nuisances that having a new pet can bring. Before I could get another word out of my mouth, my son and my daughter quickly swoops in and grabs this fluffy goodness into their arms, swarming around me, begging if they could keep her. Well of course seeing this very outward display of affection and emotion from my kids, especially that of my son absolutely melts my heart and any resistance I had to argue against the idea has completely shattered. Right then and there, the obvious choice to keep her was already made; and from that day we adopted a new family member, whom because of her regal appearance, we all decided to call â€Å"Cleopatra. Over the next few years, ten to be exact, Cleopatra, whom we affectionately call Cleo, has definitely proven to be the â€Å"Queen† in the family. She quickly made it known who was boss. Everyone loved her; family friends, neighbors as well as strangers. Everywhere we went, she went; and if you didn’t see her, you knew she was not too far behind. New to the family, Cleo went everywhere and always knew how to behave and have a good time. Most weekends the kids and I would try to find something to do that included Cleo so that she would not be left home alone. She’d often accompany us to zoos, church picnics; back yard Bar-B-Q’s as well as the occasional walk to the local supermarket. The neighborhood we live in has plenty of parks for her to run around in, dig up holes, lay in the grass or just sleep, which she often did. Cleo’s easy going and fun-lovin’ demeanor made it comfortable for anyone to be around her. I can recall a time where she laid quietly and let my little nieces actually put pigtails in her hair and on her entire body; including her ears and tail. .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .postImageUrl , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:visited , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:active { border:0!important; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:active , .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4 .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udfb5ca5a6273350b74a76c3f842c90e4:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Freud Essay On JesusWhat a silly sight, but as â€Å"queen† Cleo took it all in stride. The absolute best thing about having a dog like Cleo (in an apartment without a yard), she knew exactly when she had to go and had no problem letting you know when it was time to â€Å"go. My girl not only brought her leash to you, she would knock on the front door barking until you got up to take her out. We could never really figure it out, but Cleo made it clear to us that going out to take care of her business, was also her time to meet and make new friends. Yes, Cleo was very friendly and the whole neighborhood knew it. Sometimes she would walk us specifically towards our neighbor’s yard. On a few occasions either before work or in the evening afterwards, during her walks she would wiggle her now large and fluffy body out of her leash and make her way into one of our neighbors yard, where I would then have to beg, plead, whine and cry to pry her back home only to have her run right back to the neighbors yard the very next day. Even though we lived in apartment with plenty of space to roam, Cleo always wanted to be outside, such is the case that whenever she heard the front door open, she’d dart straight out into the hallway; and if you weren’t paying attention, in a flash she’d be out the door quickly making her way down the three flights of stairs, around the corner and up the block! Before you can figure out how, when or what happened, you’re quickly engaging her in a long winded chase. For the next few minutes what seems like hours, you would be either running, threatening, cussing and screaming out to her to stop. I swear this dog was too fast and slick for her own good. Then it occurred to me this was actually a game for her. I’m convinced she got sheer pleasure out of watching us chase her. Sometimes, she’d even have the audacity to let you actually catch up to her; at which point she’d look at you and scurry off again. Frustrated and annoyed you take off after her yet again for another tiresome chase. Neither of us (the kids or I) found this game amusing, in fact after a while we figured once we stopped chasing, she’d eventually give up and came back home. While chasing after Cleo wasn’t exactly my idea of a goodtime; truth is, she actually helped me shed some unwanted pounds and stay in shape-back then anyway. Today, I preferred her late night company, with her sprawled across the foot of my bed keeping my feet warm. No matter which role she’s comfortable in; guard dog, best friend, feet warmer, fitness guru or neighborhood watch, my girl Cleo is definitely one of a kind and the Queen of her throne. And after two liters of puppies, mounds of green grass and dirt holes dug up, a dozen or so picnic scraps, endless cheesy puffs and doggy treats later, we discovered our dearly beloved Cleo was silently suffering from ovarian cancer. Not long afterwards, we gave her a final run in the park, where she was laid to rest to become a part of the beauty that will forever sprout up and bring new life for others to bask in and enjoy. Since Cleo’s passing, my family and I have rescued and adopted 3 more dogs, who have each brought us a ton of love, furry fond memories and more one on one chases down the block, and for that we would not have it any other way.

Physical Development in Middle Childhood free essay sample

One important factor of physical activity during these years is to improve their gross and fine motor skills which assists with the many other benefits that being physically active will give a child. Their gross and fine motor skills are becoming more advanced and need to be capitalised upon. Children are learning to ride bikes, play in organised and team orientated sports – all with more co-ordination and understanding than before. While engaging in these activity’s they are improving their gross motor skills and this gives them a great sense of gratification. Also during this time their fine motor skills will be improving such as their handwriting, drawing, painting, crafts and building. In the middle childhood years children are becoming more aware of their surroundings, community and culture. They can start to see themselves as an individual that can read, write, learn and adhere to rules and understand why we need them. We will write a custom essay sample on Physical Development in Middle Childhood or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Physical development can affect other areas of development in very positive ways. It helps them to be able to relate interact with others. This era sees those making relationships with their peers. They make friendships with others and along with friendship come the enviable fights. This is also important as they learn to sort out these disagreements and learn from them. This comes from their developing ability to think for themselves – having different points of view, being able to see others points of view and having a longer attention span. The skills they are learning and improving at this very important time of their lives will assist them as children and builds the foundations of having great confidence within themselves and having healthy and active bodies. It is believed that inability to perfect their gross fine motor skills by being physically inactive will lead to many consequences not only physically but also in other areas of their development. Inactivity will inhibit the Childs co-ordination, spatial awareness, social skills; their larger muscles would be underdeveloped. Inactivity promotes obesity and other serious health issues. At this age children have boundless energy and find it hard to sit down for long periods of time as their bodies and brains crave the need to more around and are active. Along with the need to move comes the need for attention and socialising. During this time their bodies are growing taller and gaining weight. Physical activity is crucial at this time because they are showing themselves what their bodies are able to do and what they are able to do better than when the learned the skill. For example when children are in their early childhood they learn how to run and jump, in middle childhood they are taking those skills and developing proper athletic abilities and talents. They can run faster on the track, swim faster in the pool and throw balls with more precision and show themselves and others the talents they are developing. If during this time they are not able to do that they will see their peers excelling at these activities and that they themselves are falling behind. This severely affects their confidence. They are very aware of their peers and compare themselves to others constantly which is why they are adapting to organised sports – their competitiveness is kicking in. It’s in the children’s nature to want to be active in sports and it gives them the stimulation and organisation that they need. It’s also in some children’s nature to be shy and reserved. It’s important for all students to be improving their skills but most important for the more reserved children. Inactivity will only perpetuate their shyness because they are missing out on group activities in a fun environment. Being a part of a team helps confidence and communication with their peers. Children need to embrace being active from early on – especially now as their bodies crave being active they will associate ‘activity’ with ‘fun’. Inability to develop their gross motor skills can lead to the children feeling sluggish, weight will be gained lowering their confidence and increasing the risk of obesity and their relationship with physical activity will be mentally unhealthy. Inability to develop their fine motor skills is also just as important. This is the time where children need to perfect their handwriting, craft making and reading these are very important skills that they will need for the rest of their lives. If children find they don’t excel at these skills they will find they get frustrated, it lowers they confidence and willingness to try and parts of heir brain are underdeveloped. For example in this era children are starting to dress themselves and inability to do this will leave them frustrated and disappointed that they are behind. As parents and teachers we need to do our best to always keep the children active as it most certainly affects the other areas of their development. Implementing ph ysical activity in lessons is very important. There are 3 activities that I will now explain that I think are great ways to implement to help with keeping the children active and improving their motor skills. Firstly I would have each child in the classroom have a job they need to do every day in the classroom. Whether it is to give out work books, hand out pens, feed the plants or collect lunch orders. This gives each child the understanding of the importance of rules, responsibilities and the feeling of being included and the knowledge of being able to share and work as a team. This activity is more related to their fine motor skills and cognitive development. Secondly I would introduce the ‘Gold Star’ System. I would have the students chose a book and reading aloud to the class. During this time if the children are stuck on a word they don’t know other students can assist with helping them. If the student reads the book without any help they receive 5 gold stars. I would also have the children practice their handwriting and everything they submit a neatly written piece of writing they would also receive 5 gold stars. If the children need assistance many times or have sloppy writing they have stars deducted. This also helps with fine motor skills and they also can show how well they can read write and help others with their reading writing. Thirdly I would introduce team sports based around maths and spelling. I think it would be a great learning environment to take the students outside to a basketball court or an oval and have them grouped into teams. I would give them maths and spelling questions and the teams with the most correct answers would add more gold stars to their boards. I think this would be a really fun way to learn, challenge themselves and burn off energy. Working in teams is fantastic motivation to not let yourself or any of your team mates down. In conclusion, Physical activity is vital in the middle childhood years for many reasons. Inactivity leads to many consequences in the Childs Health, Motor Skills and all other areas of child development. There are many things as Teachers we can do to in a learning environment to accommodate the physical needs of our students as to make sure they are developing as best they can be. ? Sunday Celebrations and meaning Behind it Faith is the significant aspect of the personal development. Thus, Sunday is considered as the holy day or the day of God. In this case, ‘Sunday Celebrations’ can be discussed as the official and public worships which are held in the church. ‘Sunday Celebrations’ are of great importance for Christians. That is why even when the Mass cannot be held because of the absence of a priest, the members of the community gather in order to partic ipate in the Celebration of the Word of God and Communion. ‘Sunday Celebrations’ provide Christians with the opportunity to participate in the dialogue with God which is realized with the help of definite rites, praying, and listening to the Word of God. I have an experience of attending the traditional ‘Sunday Celebrations’ where the main part of the liturgy is the Eucharist and Communion, and I also participated in assemblies which were held without a priest. Today, Sunday gatherings without priests also can be considered as important for the personal spiritual development. However, if the ‘Sunday Celebration’ is organized according to the main liturgical principles and includes the Eucharist, it consists of many parts, and each of them has its specific sacred meaning for Christians. Moreover, there are no insignificant elements in the process of Sunday liturgy. Each liturgy should be opened with the Introductory rites which help to organize the community and begin the celebrations. Thus, the Introductory rites are traditionally associated with the priest’s sprinkling the holy water. This rite is important for creating the atmosphere of Christ’s presence and the feeling of blessing. The next element of the liturgy is the Celebration of the Word of God. It is the main part of the realization of the dialogue between Christians and God. Christians listen to the words of God about the peculiarities of their salvation and redemption and strengthen their faith with the help of reflection on the words.Advertising Looking for essay on religion theology? In this situation the Christians’ prayers can be discussed as their responses to the words of God. Nevertheless, the most significant elements of the liturgy ar e the Eucharist and the Communion rites. These parts of the liturgy are conducted in order to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. They are the moments when Christians can share the consecrated bread and wine as the symbols of Christ’s body and blood. It is also important to determine such parts of the liturgy as Thanksgiving and Concluding rites. Thanksgiving prayers should be different from the Eucharist prayers. It is the moment when Christians faithfully praise the mercy of God with the help of psalms and hymns. To conclude the liturgy and provide the connection between this sacred Sunday ritual and the everyday life, it is necessary to pay attention to the Concluding rites. It is also the moment of the personal reflection when people are aware of the mystery of the Eucharist and Communion and their relations with God. Nowadays, it is possible to participate in ‘Sunday Celebrations’ which are held not by a priest but by the spiritual leader of the community or even by a layperson. Some years ago such assemblies were rather rare, but today Christians admit the opportunity to gather in order to praise God without a priest’s presence. I agree that it is important to gather each Sunday in order to follow the ritual of a liturgy and when the priest is absent Christians can realize the process with omitting the elements connected with the Eucharist. However, such aspects of the liturgy as the Celebration of the Word of God and Thanksgiving remain to be significant. Every chance to participate in the ‘Sunday Celebration’ is spiritually meaningful for Christians. If some years ago there was only one variant of providing the liturgy on Sundays, today there is the division between the traditional liturgy conducted by a priest and the holy assembly without the priest’s participation.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Sunday Celebrations and meaning Behind it specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In spite of the number of elements which form the liturgical procedure or a ‘Sunday Celebration’, the main aspect of these celebrations is the Christians’ faith and their intention to participate in the dialogue with God and praise the mercy and glory of God.

External and Internal Environmental Analysis of Bayou Inn Essay - 3

External and Internal Environmental Analysis of Bayou Inn - Essay Example Success in the hospitality industry can only be achieved if a company models its vision statement to target the customers it intends to provide services (Briggs, 1999). The vision statement must be brief, clear and concise. It must indicate the general direction the hotel aims to head, while capturing the dream of the founders of the company. Therefore, the recommended vision statement must highlight the high regard in which customers are held by the employees, management and shareholders of the hotel (Briggs, 1999). In the case of Bayou Inn, the vision statement can highlight how the business intends to look in a specified duration of time. In such a scenario, the capturing of Bayou Inn’s aspirations occurs. An analysis of vision statements of the biggest hotels in the hospitality industry indicates that these statements capture the aspirations of their founder; for example, Conrad Hilton’s vision statement for the Hilton chain of luxurious hotels, â€Å"To achieve ex traordinary things, you must first dream magnificent dreams† (Briggs, 1999). Therefore, an example of Bayou Inn’s vision statement could be, â€Å"Taking care of you by giving you a home when you are away from home† (Briggs, 1999). The mission statement is considerably different from the vision statement in that it provides a description of what the organization intends to do after reaching its target mark (Briggs, 1999). Druker (1954) explains that the mission statement outlines the purpose of an organization by providing realistic and clear business objectives. Drucker also emphasizes that the customers rely on the mission statement to figure out the services it provides (Briggs, 1999). Rarely do people look at the statutes, articles or names of an organization to determine the role it plays.

Visual Aid that Illustrates a Problem Essay Example for Free

Visual Aid that Illustrates a Problem Essay Organizations these days are facing numerous problems related to recruitment, job assignment, fair performance evaluation, and encouraging diverse workforce within the workplace. Nevertheless there is another growing problem for the organizations that has significant impacts over the performance and as well as reputation of a company. It does not create a mouth-opening effect on us when we get to know any issue related to sexual harassment that is happening somewhere in the country, whether it is any organization, community, educational institution, or village. It is because there is no such country in the world that has totally eliminated this issue, even if they have, then other diversity issues such as, discrimination, hatred, and glass-ceiling occur. The paper would discuss a problem of sexual harassment, analyze the legal concerns, highlight the thoughts regarding the issue, and suggestions for overcoming the problem. Introduction to the Problem Sexual harassment is a term that is used to define any act of harassment where a person or employee ‘makes continued, unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature, to another employee, against his or her wishes’ (Heathfield, 2010). There is not any specific way of harassing the opposite gender in the workplace; in fact, there are variety of ways that can be used depending on the circumstances. People pass on jokes, non-verbal gestures, or other offensive comments on the physique, dresses, or way of walking or talking of the other party. Touching and making some bodily connection also comes under sexual harassment, where patting someone’s back, holding him or her from waste, and scratching is done. Moreover, requests to the other party are made to have date even that party has refused before. And finally, sending emails or texts that contain some lewd text or pictures and playing sexy music are also part of sexual harassment. Significance of the Problem Sexual harassment has increased to so much extent that now it is considered to be a common thing, which would not have any negative impact towards the organization or its performance. But in reality, it does have several legal concerns over the confidence and self-esteem of the harassed one, performance of the organization, violation of the ethical and moral principles, and also the corporate culture. Starting from the moral and ethical issues, one does not have any right to sexually harass anyone else in the workplace even if the other party does not entertain the offer or gets reluctant to it. It violates the ethical principles because one does not feel the sense of freedom where he or she is working, and since it is the workplace so protest or condemnation cannot be done openly. Second of all, it diverts the mind of both the harasser and harassee from their work since they continue to disturb and get disturbed from each other’s reactions. Therefore, the time is wasted and focus is not made on the everyday tasks, hence resulting in the decline in productivity of both parties. As far as the self-esteem and confidence of harassee is concerned, it gets hurt seriously because the harassee cannot openly raise voice in front of others to either protect him/her or complaint about the harasser. Moreover, there is a great chance of other people perceiving the harassing situation as the consensual relationship or flirting of both the parties, which might degrade one’s image. Not only this, once the rumors about sexual harassment being happening in an organization spread, it exacerbates company’s image and so many of the women or minorities would hesitate to join it in the future. This growing issue in the workplaces have tarnished the image of many organizations and as well as the countries where minorities are harassed either sexually or for some other purpose. Although this is a silent issue that has not been considered to deal at the upper level either by the companies or governments; nevertheless, employees are the only one who can help themselves and get out if this nuisance. Overcoming the Problem Sexual harassment can be prevented by the organizations if they develop and introduce certain stiff rules about the issue, which ensure that whoever is found to be harassing others would either be fired or suspended. Of course, the employer would not want this issue to prevail in the company so the harassee must complain secretly to the immediate boss or manager who could take the issue seriously in dealing with it. Also, harassee must have proper proofs and records of harassment been done by the harasser, so that he or she could take legal actions against the harasser and let him or her face the music (Heathfield, 2010). This would not be it; in fact the role of government and law-making bodies is very decisive here that can introduce certain laws especially for the workplaces where sexual harassment usually takes place. Once the rules are implemented, the issue would certainly take a rain check and minimize. Gantt Chart Conclusion Therefore, there are many diversity issues prevailing in the organizations, one of them is sexual harassment that involves the passing of certain remarks, words, jokes, or some physical contact with the other party. Its outcomes are quite gloomy where the performance level of employees goes down, image is tarnished and corporate and ethical principles are violated. The issue can be managed by taking action on-the-spot by the harassee and the employer, and also by implementing stiff rules and regulations. Moreover, encouraging diversity and providing autonomy to both minorities and women must be incorporate within the organizational culture over which every employee would have to act on. This issue is not the one that cannot be stopped and would always happen like others mentioned in the start of the paper, in fact proper measures along with stiff rules for implementation would definitely help the companies to nip this problem in the bud and eliminate all the concerns related to it. The Role of Women in Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Essay -- Frankenstein

The Role of Women in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Whether an author is conscious of the fact or not, a fictional work cannot avoid reflecting the political, social, economic, and religious background of the author. Therefore, regardless of Frankenstein's categorization being that of science fiction, Mary Shelley reveals her own fears and thoughts, and, as a result, reveals a great deal about the time and place in which she wrote. She mentions specific geographical locations throughout Europe, she raises ethical questions concerning the synthesis of life, and she writes in the context of popular contemporary philosophy and the importance of environment vs. experiences. Most importantly to this essay, however, is the manner in which Shelley reflects the characteristics of the Romantic period in which it was written and its attitudes toward women. In an article that discusses female authors during this time period, we find that Romanticism was a male-dominated movement. The same article states that this dominance prevented female authors from being given the same consideration as males (Behrendt 147). Moreover, women who crossed this "culturally-imposed boundary" were routinely charged with "unnaturalness" or "monstrosity" (Ibid.). This is clearly portrayed through the author herself, particularly in the introduction of the novel where her introduction is full of apologies for her work. Despite the self-proclaimed pressure to become a writer in the expectation of continuation of her parents' writing, the story is wrought with marks of difficulties of having been taken less than seriously. One place where it is particularly evident is in the preface of the book, although parts were writte... ...ely, in the representation of Shelley herself in the monster. Financial Implication of Decision

Evidencing the increased emphasis on exit strategy was research conducted during the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s that analyzed the exit process and created a framework that business decision makers could use to determine when and how to exit. For example, Conrad Berenson posited an exit model in 1963 that identified five categories of criteria used to evaluate a product abandonment decision: 1. Financial security, which entails determining if the minimum return on investment is being met for the firm; 2.Financial opportunity, or calculating the return on alternative uses of the firm's resources; 3. Marketing strategy, which determines the value of the product above pure financial profit, such as brand-name worth and the value of established distribution channels; 4. Social responsibility, or criteria that encompass the firm's responsibilities to customers, employees, suppliers, and so forth; and 5. Organized intervention, which takes into account actions by government, society, o r labor groups as a result of the decision to exit. And you need to anticipate the impact of key business decisions on your accounting and financial reporting. * Is your organization raising debt or equity? Acquiring a business? Carving-out a non-core operation? Complex accounting and financial reporting issues can arise as a result of changes dictated by your entity’s capital agenda. * Are you undertaking a significant business transformation? Assessing how a shared services center can improve efficiencies in your reporting process?Streamlining your accounting policies can help you reduce risk and manage cost. * Does the business operate in multiple jurisdictions? An assessment of your statutory reporting processes can allow you to manage risk, increase consistency in financial reporting, and realize efficiencies. * Are you planning to upgrade or replace your existing ERP system? Early assessment of changing accounting requirements should be incorporated into planned migratio ns to avoid expensive rework later.

Mano and Other Words That Break Spanishs Gender Rule

Spanish nouns that end with -o are masculine, and ones that end with -a are feminine, right? Well, almost always. But there are exceptions to the  gender  rule, of which the two best-known are mano, the word for hand, which is feminine; and dà a, the word for day, which is masculine. So you can talk about la mano and las manos  and well as el dà a and los dà as. Key Takeaways Most Spanish nouns ending in -o are masculine, and most ending in -a are feminine, but there are exceptions. Some of the exceptions occur because of how the words were treated in other languages, such as Latin and Greek. Many nouns that refer to jobs or roles of people can be either masculine or feminine depending on the person they refer to. 6 Ways in Which the Rule Is Broken Exceptions fall into six  categories: Words that are shortened versions of other words. For example, la foto (photograph) is feminine because its short for la fotografà a.Words that end in -ista as the equivalent of the English -ist. For example, dentista can be either masculine or feminine depending on whether the dentist referred to is a man or woman. A few words with other endings are treated the same way. For example, modelo can be either masculine or feminine when referring to a human model, but masculine in other uses (such as when referring to a model airplane).Words whose meanings vary depending on the gender. For example, in some areas, la radio means radio, while el radio means radius or radium. Sometimes la radio is used to refer to the communications medium and el radio for a radio set. Some masculine words that come from Greek and end in -a (often -ma). Most of these words have English cognates.A few compound nouns, which are traditionally  masculine, even when the noun portion comes from a feminine noun. Words that are just exceptions, such as mano and dà a. Usually these exceptions come from the way the words were treated in Latin. Among the abundance of words that fit that category are el/la atleta (athlete), el/la artista (artist), el/la astronauta (astronaut), el/la dentista (dentist), el/la comentarista (commentator), el/la izquierdista (leftist or left-winger), el/la oficinista (office worker), el/la poeta (poet), el/la profeta (prophet), and el/la turista (tourist). Feminine NounsThat Use El Also not included in the list are combinations such as el agua (water) — feminine words that begin with a stressed a- or ha- and are preceded by el in the singular form only. Others are el à ¡guila (eagle), el ama (woman of the house), and el alma (soul). But note that the normal rules are followed in the plural form: las aguas, las à ¡guilas, las amas and las almas. With these words, el doesnt indicate gender but is used instead for ease of pronunciation. It is similar to the way in which Englist substitutes an for a in front of some nouns, as the rule applies to the opening sound of the word, not how its spelled.
